Sobrero Francesco
In the beating heart of Barolo, in Castiglione Falletto, lie the 13 hectares of the Sobrero family, where their great reds and Barolo are born. Pernanno, Villero, Ornato, Piantà, Valentino and Amellea: the magnificent six Crus, the crown jewels that give life to four selected wines. The remaining 3 hectares are in Canelli, the historic home of Moscato.

The story of Azienda Sobrero begins in 1940: the protagonist is grandfather Francesco, who grows grapes and sells them until the 1960s, when the enthusiasm of the young Settimo and Pier Franco leads to winemaking. The first Barolo label dates from 1964. The vintages pass, accompanied by constant growth and the gradual acquisition of new land, building up to the current 16 hectares, enriched in 2008 by the Moscato vineyards in Canelli. In 2000 a new signature arrives: Flavio, Settimo's son, who thanks to his studies as an oenologist helps the winery grow in keeping with the tradition that embraces modern technology, continually raising the quality of the wines from the very vine, treated with low-impact products and in recent years certified organic.
The Sobrero range is a mix of diversity and excellence. In total, 12 labels are offered: 4 Barolos from the magnificent 6 Crus (each one, with its nuanced flavors and distinct character, represents the essence of the vineyard from which it comes), a Nebbiolo, Barbera (one oak-aged and one without), and Dolcetto. Then there are the whites: a Metodo Classico ExtraBrut, a Moscato and a Chardonnay. Rounding off the range is an aromatized wine, the Barolo Chinato.
My selection
Since 1940, the Sobrero family has passionately guarded the most prestigious Crus of Castiglione Falletto. Today Flavio combines grandfather Francesco's wisdom with an organic philosophy, creating wines that are the pure essence of the Piedmontese terroir.
If it's your first time, I recommend the Dolcetto d'Alba: it is the wine of everyday tradition in the Langhe. Fresh and fragrant, with its aromas of cherry and almond, it is the ideal companion for a convivial meal and for those seeking an immediately enjoyable wine with great character.
Looking for the emotion of the "King of wines"? Try the Barolo Riserva Pernanno: born from one of the most highly regarded Crus, it is a monumental, austere and elegant wine, aged for a long time to deliver notes of truffle, leather and undergrowth. A bottle that represents the pinnacle of Italian winemaking.
Salute!
